JOEL MARTIN’S JAZZICAL QUARTET

December 11 @ 7:30pm premieres its latest CD, PERESTROIKA

Russian Classics Meet Jazz at the Chelsea Art Museum’s Celebration of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg

Joel A. Martin is an award-winning classical and jazz pianist who has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony and Delaware Symphony, and the Emerson String Quartet. He has also given numerous recitals in concert halls worldwide including Kennedy Center; Purchase College Performing Arts Center; Avery Fisher Hall; Severance Hall; the Schomburg Library; the Phillips Collection; Kaukametsa Hall, Finland; and Opera Comique, Paris – in a private concert for Francois Mitterand.

 
   

Martin was the youngest competitor in the 1985 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He is the recipient of the National Arts Club of New York's Lebow Award; is a SONY Innovators Awards finalist for music; and in 1992 Concert Artist Guild two-year Career Development Fellowship.

In 1995, Joel created and trademarked Jazzical, a celebration of creative fusion and the explosive union of classical composition and jazz innovation ignited with a fresh spirit all its own.

Jazzical has been the subject of feature articles and reviews in The New York Times, Piano Today, Seconds Magazine, Jazz Times, and Cadence Magazine. Jazzical with Joel Martin has also been featured on BET (Black Entertainment Television), NBC-TV and PBS with performances at the Guggenheim Museum, Lincoln Center, Fez, Birdland in New York, at Snug Harbor, and at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival with jazz clarinet legend Alvin Batiste as well as over 400 classical and jazz radio stations nationwide.

Joel is touring, writing and arranging as Musical Director of the Cab Calloway Orchestra, led by his grandson C. Calloway Brooks and recently arranged classical and jazz music for international operatic superstar, Jessye Norman.

Upcoming projects for 2003-2004 include Jazzical commissions for collaborations of the Westchester Oratorio Society and St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra; and the The Springfield Symphony (MA) and the Cab Calloway Orchestra" for 2004-2005 featuring the music of Cab Calloway and Jazzical. On December 11, 2003 Joel will unveil his 4th Jazzical CD entitled, "Jazzical: Perestroika" at the Chelsea Art Museum in NYC as part of a celebration the 300th Anniversary of St Petersburg, Russia.
