ItaliaArabia forum
ItaliaArabia juxtaposes 80 works by mid-twentieth century Italian and Egyptian, Lebanese, Syrian, and Iranian artists, revealing the cross-influences of European and Middle Easter art. An additional collection of manuscripts, textiles, musical instruments, and cartographic documents span an entire millennium of Italian, Ottoman, Safavid and Qajar cultural traditions, creating a historical frame of reference for the visual and thematic convergences of the twentieth century.
The exhibition ItaliaArabia arises out of the life-long commitment of Chelsea Art Museum’s founders to foster crosscultural dialogue. It is the Museum’s mission to enforce a fundamental belief in human rights and to cultivate respect for the world at large. In this spirit, CAM is delighted to present the following public programs:
Film January 22, 2009 at 7 :00 pm
A screening of Waiting for Pasolini, directed by Daoud Aoulad-Syad (2007) will be followed by a brief discussion on the themes relating to the film/exhibition. This distinctly Moroccan comedy set in Ouarzazate, the town used by countless American and European film productions, reveals how the village is turned upside down when it is announced that an Italian film crew will be arriving to shoot.
Selected Best Arabic Film at the 2007 Cairo International Film Festival.
Theater January 29, 2009 at 7 :00 pm
A reading of selected scenes from "Betrayed," directed by Pippin Parker. In early 2007, George Packer published an article in The New Yorker about Iraqi interpreters who jeopardized their lives on behalf of the Americans in Iraq, with little or no U.S. protection or security. The article drew national attention to the humanitarian crisis and moral scandal. Betrayed, based on Mr. Packer's interviews in Baghdad, tells the story of three young Iraqis - two men and one woman - motivated to risk everything by America's promise of freedom. Betrayed explores the complex relationships among the Iraqis themselves, and with their American supervisor, struggling to find purpose while a country collapses around them.
